| The FBody platform was used by GM in four stages from 1967 - 2002 for the Chevy Camaro and Pontiac Firebird. First-Generation F-body cars were made in 1967, 1968, and 1969 and were a direct response to the extremely popular Ford Mustang and both Pontiac and Chevrolet offered at least three different engine combinations - from an economical V6 to the Chevy 396 or Pontiac 400 V8 beasts. Second-Generation F-body cars (1970 - 1981) were really 1970-1/2 due to massive design and development delays from 1969. The Camaro and Firebird were bigger and boasted popular styling changes as well. Chevy offered the monstrous 454 and Pontiac the 455.
Third-Generation F-body cars (1982 - 1992) were a total, modern redesign which resulted in a lighter car that handled better and was the only FBody period that made a 4-cylinder available. Fourth-Generation F-body cars (1993 - 2002) were much-revised from the previous period and engine options were limited to just one V-6 and one V-8. The entire platform ceased in 2002 and the closest cousins are the Pontiac GTO and new 2009-2010 Camaro (concept appeared in 2005). Definition of LSX vehicles: Chevy Corvette, Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, Pontiac GTO, GM & Chevrolet trucks powered by v8 engines also called LS1, LS2, LS6. |
